(ANSA) - ROME - During the opening speech at the summit of
the Heads of Government of the Central European Initiative
(CEI), which began at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome,
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte confirmed today the
country's "strong and consistent commitment to supporting the EU
enlargement into the Western Balkans. Italy will always be at
the forefront and will never be satisfied until we achieve this
result."
"Connecting Europe today is a priority objective and
therefore integration and dialogue are prosperity factors and
represent the peculiar aspect of Italy's action," Conte said.
Then the premier recalled that this year marks the 30th
anniversary of the foundation of the CEI "in which our Foreign
Ministry played a key role: an amazing adventure which was the
result of the brilliant intuition of the then Minister Gianni De
Michelis who in 1989 succeeded in foreseeing the challenges and
opportunities that would be the outcome of some events occurring
in Europe,"
Prime Minister Conte then underlined Italy's "sorrow and
solidarity" for the earthquake in Albania, addressing the
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who was among the summit
participants. Italy, said Conte, intends "to contribute to the
fund for the reconstruction of Albania. With the president of
the European Commission von der Leyen, we agreed there will be a
conference of donors and Italy will be at the forefront" of
tackling this issue. (ANSA).
