EU sees amnisty law in Macedonia as key for reconciliation

EU spokesperson says adopted law must not interfere with Courts

19 December, 17:41
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, DECEMBER 19 - EU spokesperson Maja Kocijancic said today that the approval of the Macedonian Parliament for a law offering amnesty to some suspected perpetrators of a violent storming of parliament in April last year, "is an important step for reconciliation in the society and for the need to overcome painful polarisation". Yesterday, all 95 lawmakers present in the 120-seat parliament backed a draft amnesty law over the April 2017 incident.

"This process is crucial in helping build a national consensus on strategic issues for the interests of the country," the spokesperson said. Nevertheless, Brussels expects that "the adopted law will not interfere in the independence of the Courts". (ANSA).
