(ANSA) - TRIESTE - The European Commission approved the extension of the Paks Hungarian nuclear plant, which is being financed by Russia, Euronews reports. For European officials some conditions must be fulfilled in order to avoid the operation being considered state aid. For example, one third of the electricity must be sold on the open market. The EU officials, Euronews added, made no reference to where the money is coming from. Critics say the project is another example of the Hungarian government looking to strengthen ties with Russia.

The expansion of Hungary's nuclear power plant will be financed mostly with a loan from Russia of 10 billion euro and carried out by Russia's Rosatom, The Independent reports.(ANSA).
