Bulgaria: corruption, 25 customs officials arrested in Varna

They demanded bribes for reducing taxes on containers

(ANSA) - SOFIA, JAN. 14 - Twenty-five inspectors of the Customs of the port of Varna, Bulgarian city on the Black Sea, were arrested today by agents of the Service for the fight against organized crime. These customs officers, according to investigators, used to demand bribes for recording reduced customs taxes on goods containers arrivimg at the port of Varna. Inspectors have been monitored by special services since September last year. During searches carried out in the homes of those arrested, more than 700,000 levs in cash were found, that is approximately 350,000 euros.

The EC's monitoring reports have shown for several years that the authorities in Sofia had only modest success in the fight against corruption and organized crime.
