Undewater 4.6 quake shakes coastal Croatia, no major damage

Epicenter near the town of Split

(ANSA-AP) - ZAGREB - Croatian seismologists say an underwater 4.6-magnitude earthquake has shaken central parts of the country's Adriatic coast, causing panic and sending people out of their homes. No casualties or major damage have been initially reported.

The Croatian Seismology Service says the tremor occurred several minutes before 2 p.m. (1300GMT) on Friday with the epicenter near the coastal town of Split. The quake was felt at the surrounding islands and along the coast.

The official HINA news agency says residents in higher buildings in Split said the quake knocked objects from shelves in their homes. Many have come out into the streets and squares fearing more tremors.

HINA says no major damage appears to have occurred.
