Hungary: Orban, minority in Romania deserves respect

Relations with Bucarest are getting worse

09 December, 13:14

(ANSA) - TRIESTE - Hungary's prime minister Viktor Orban urges the Hungarian minority in Romania to vote in Sunday's parliamentary election there and "speak up for their own interests". Orban spoke on yesterday in in Satu Mare (Szatmárnémeti), in his visit in north-west Romania, where a large Hungarian minority is allocated. At a press conference held with Hunor Kelemen, head of the ethnic Hungarian RMDSZ party, the prime minister said that Romania's government does not help local Hungarians who - he says - "do not always receive the respect they deserve". The minority group's rights have long been a contentious issue between the two countries, whose relations are getting worse. Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, banned Hungarian diplomats from participating in Romania's national day celebrations on 1st of December, commemorating the 1918 incorporation into Romania of Transylvania, an area long dominated by Hungary.
