Turkey: Austria against continuing EU accession talks

Foreign Minister, situation gets worse, it has no place in EU

15 November, 14:31

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, NOV. 14 - Austria closes the door to Turkey.

The decision on the continuation of Turkey's EU accession negotiations will be made at the December summit, but today Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz took a stance ahead of the Foreign Council, whose agenda-setting deems the situation in Turkey the first priority to be discussed. ''I am concerned over the fact that, due to the agreement on refugees, someone in Europe wants to behave as if nothing was happening in Turkey and does not want to talk about this issue. Neverthless, the truth is - Kurz said - that the situation in Turkey is increasingly negative: who does not agree (with the government, ed) is intimidated, members of the opposition are imprisoned and the death penalty will be restored. In relation to these matters, Europe can not pretend nothing happened. I don't approve the conditions Turkey puts to do its part, such as the acceleration of negotiations and visa liberalization''.

Austria, he stated, ''certainly'' won't give its support for the opening of new negotiating chapters with Turkey. (ANSA).
