Slovenia: three dead and one wounded in hospital shootout

Murderer, a man in his 70s, killed by agents

23 August, 17:11
(ANSA) - LJUBLJANA, AUG. 23 - Three people - not two as initially reported - were killed in a shootout yesterday afternoon at Isola, on the Slovenian Adriatic coast: the victims are a doctor and an agent, as well as the perpetrator of the insane act, an alcoholic in his 70s known to the police for two armed robberies. It seems that the murderer, Darko Gregoric, had been targeting for some time a young urologist, Luis Guillermo Martinez Bustamante, 36yo, whom the killer has lured into a hospital waiting room. When he pulled out a gun, two police officers rushed into the room. These two were the same officers against whom the man had fired the first shots. One of them died in the operating room after a few hours, and even the doctor, whom the murderer had assaulted, died some time later the same day. According to media reports, Gregoric intended to kill the urologist and carried in his pocket a list of the doctors on duty. The man was then shot by other officers while he was attempting to escape in front of the hospital, where another policeman was injured, now out of danger. The event has deeply shaken Slovenia, while the Health Minister, Milojka Kolar Celerc, promised to adopt higher safety standards for medical staff in the hospitals throughout the country.(ANSA).
