(ANSA) - BUCHAREST - The number of foreigners applying for
Romanian citizenship quadrupled in one year, Mediafax agency
reported citing local authorities. In 2015 there were 81,500
applicants, compared to the 21,000 from the year before. The
majority of the applicants who ask for the citizenship based on
the origins are Moldovan, followed by the Israelis, while the
requests for naturalisation come mainly from citizens from Arab
countries. The procedure of obtaining the citizenship in Romania
lasts about one year. Around 10% of the applications is
declined.
The growing tendency continued in 2016 with 52,000
applications presented so far.
According to Eurostat, 24,300 Romanians obtained the
citizenship of other EU countries in 2014 - mainly Italian
(26.5%), Hungarian (25.5%) and German (10.7%).
