Migrants: EU, 'more needs to be done, G7 support'

Tusk, data on Med route towards Italy not encouraging

26 May, 13:59
(ANSA) - ISE-SHIMA (JAPAN) - The migrant situation in Europe has improved with the closure of the Balkan route but the 'Mediterranean (route) remains active and data on the last few days is not encouraging on arrivals from north Africa and Libya towards Italy: it is necessary to do more, great work is needed and the EU needs the support of the G7 and its partners", EU Council President Donald Tusk told a press conference with EU Commission President Jean Claude Juncker, before the start of the G7 in Japan.

The situation in Europe - explained Tusk - has improved with the closure of the Balkan route and a drop in illegal migrants towards Greece, which according to Frontex data plunged 90% with 60 arrivals a day against 7,000 last October. But the emergency remains in place on the ''Mediterranean route'', he noted, citing data from ''the last few days''.

''The EU needs the solidarity and support of the G7 and its partners and, although I think that a program can't actually be made today, it is important and positive to start giving a sign of good will and show full support'', he added, stressing three points on which to work together with partners.

''We have the responsibility of solidarity because immigration at this point is a global crisis'' and the support of the G7 can become concrete with the support and financial assistance to refugees and 'host' countries like Lebanon and Jordan.

Tusk suggested a model of assistance based on the EU and EIB, which can become everybody's.

He also expressed the hope that the G7 will encourage reallocations around the world. ''We would be happy to receive a sign in this direction'', he continued, recalling that we are faced with ''the worst numbers since World War Two'' and a ''dramatic'' crisis in Europe. (ANSA).
