Migrants, Frontex asks for 775 guards for Italy and Greece

In order to register arrivals from Libya and Turkey

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - Frontex calls on EU governments to deploy 775 more border guards along the external borders of the Union.

The officers will be primarily used in the assistance of Greek and Italian authorities for the identification and registration of migrants coming from Libya and Turkey. This is the largest number of guards ever requested by the European agency since its opening. About 670 officers - especially 'screeners', 'debriefers' and interpreters - will be used in Italy and Greece. Another 105 officers will be deployed along some other EU's external borders. The 'screeners' play a key role in helping the authorities to trace the nationality of the migrants, identify and register them , whereas the 'debriefers' collect information on the activities of traffickers' networks.

''So far this year more than 470,000 migrants have arrived in Italy and Greece . No country can tackle such a high-pressure migration alone'', said Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri. ''It 's crucial that all those who arrive in the EU are properly registered and identified'', he said. (ANSA).
