Poland: Minister, 99% sure we have found ‘gold train’

'But we do not know what is inside'

(ANSA) - WARSAW - ''We are 99% sure we have found the train which was loaded with gold and precious objects by German Nazis in Poland in 1945, and then vanished into thin air''. This is what Poland's deputy minister of Culture Piotr Zuchowski said today during a press conference in Warsaw. ''We do not yet know what's on board'', he added.

The minister said he viewed some georadar images of the train, through which it was possible to see platforms and cannons. The train is likely to have been found on a railway track in the town of Walbrzych, southwestern Poland.

''We do not know what's inside, probably military equipment, precious objects, works of art and archives,'' Zuchowski said.

The discovery was possible because the place where the 'legendary' train had been hidden was revealed, shortly before his death, by a man who had taken part in the 1945 cover-up operation. According to the deputy minister, the two researchers who collected the man's testimony and who announced some days ago the train's discovery (asking for 10% of the value of the ''treasure'' which is supposed to be hidden in the wagons in exchange for information), could receive the share they claim to deserve, in the form of an award given by the Culture Ministry.(ANSA).
