Garden named after Auschwitz volunteer: son, well done Italy

'My father would be proud of you and very happy'

30 July, 11:36

(ANSA) - VICOLI (PESCARA) - ''Well done Italy! My father would be proud of you and he would be very happy. Today's ceremony is an example of the close ties between our two countries''. These words were spoken by Andrzej Pilecki, 83 yo, son of Witold - the Polish cavalry captain who went voluntarily to Auschwitz, in order to witness the horror of the Nazi concentration camp.

Andrzej wrote a letter to Vicoli mayor, Catia Campobasso, on the occasion of the opening of the community garden named after the Polish hero. ''Italy - Pilecki's son wrote - was engraved in my father's memory in a very friendly way. In July 1945, my father arrived here at the end of World War II, coming from the prison camp in Murnau, to enter the 2nd Polish Army Corps, whose troops were stationed in Italy. He settled down in San Giorgio and divided his time between writing his memories of Auschwitz and talking with the commanders of Polish armed forces: Italy is the 'birthplace' of the ' Pilecki report', the first ever comprehensive report on the heinous crimes committed by the Nazis at Auschwitz concentration camp''.
