Macedonia, no outcome Zaev-Gruevski meeting in Strasbourg

Players involved in dispute, committed to continuing dialogue

20 May, 18:19

(ANSA) - SKOPJE - The meeting between Prime Minister Nikola Gruevksi (conservative) and Social Democratic opposition leader Zoran Zaev at the European Parliament in Strasbourg ended without achieving concrete results, but both players confirmed they are committed to continuing dialogue in order to overcome the political impasse in Macedonia. As a joint press release - issued in Skopje after several hours of talks- has reported, Gruevski and Zaev ''remain committed to Macedonia's path towards integration into the EU, while respecting democratic principles''.

''The State's interests must be put first'', the statement reported. The meeting in Strasbourg between the two 'players' involved in the dispute in Skopje was attended even by some MEPs committed to the Balkan issue, including Eduard Kukan, Ivo Vaigl and Richard Howitt, along with the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn.

Another between Gruevski and Zaev, always with the mediation of the EU and with other international representatives, is scheduled for May 26 in Skopje.

While many are trying to find a diplomatic way out of political stalemate, there are continuing tensions in Skopje, where - after the huge two counter-demonstrations organized in recent days - by anti and pro-government groups - demonstrators continue their protest with a vengeance, camping in front the seats of government (opponents) and parliament (Prime Minister Gruevski's supporters).
