Tsipras ends campaign: 'fear is over, new era begins Sunday'

'Samaras distraught, had hoped for ECB decision against Greece'

22 January, 20:46
(ANSA) - ATHENS - Alexis Tsipras ended his electoral campaign on Thursday evening with a speech that began with the words ''the fear is over. Greece and Europe are changing''.

''On Sunday we will make history,'' the head of the left-wing party Syriza added in the crowded Omonia square of the Greek capital. ''We will not be turning the page. We will be changing era.'' Thousands of people were in the square, as were delegations from around Europe including Italy. ''United no one can stop us,'' he said.''On Sunday we will help the sun rise over Greece. It will be the end of a corrupt system. Democracy is coming back.'' ''Give us the strength to put an end to the Memorandum of catastrophes and barbary,'' Tsipras continued, saying that incumbent ''Samaras invested in fear. They clung to power by focusing on fear. No Greek prime minister had ever dropped so low, speaking badly about his own country. But now the time of all Greeks has come.'' ''Samaras and his associates have Merkel on their side,'' he said. ''We have what they don't: the people.'' ''Prime Minister Samaras is desperate. He was hoping that the European Central Bank (ECB) would take a decision against Greece,'' he said in commenting on ECB chief Mario Draghi's announcement concerning government bond acquisition.
