Slovakia, drinking water export ban in the Constitution

No transportation to foreign countries via aqueducts or tankers

(ANSA) - BRATISLAVA - Slovakia's Parliament approved by a large majority, 102 votes in favour, an amendment to the Constitution, which is strongly supported by the government, which bans export to foreign countries of drinking water through aqueducts, pipes or other means of transport such as tankers. The Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico underlined that the decision was made to protect the country's natural resources and especially water, which is certainly ''abundant'' in Slovakia, Fico admitted, but that should not however be over-exploited for commercial purposes or become a means to make money, even in an illegal way. According to a press release issued by Bratislava Parliament, the export ban does not apply to water transported for personal use, mineral water bottled in Slovakia, which will continue to be exported, and water sent abroad for humanitarian reasons. The constitutional amendments will come into force in December.(ANSA).
