Montenegro: ruling party winner of local elections

Opposition alleges fraud and calls for protest

28 May, 14:34
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 28 - In Montenegro the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) led by President Milo Djukanovic - which is a major force in the government of the country - has largely won in the local elections held yesterday in ten municipalities, including the capital Podgorica.

According to the data made available until now - votes are still being counted - the DPS gained percentages higher than 50% in several of the municipalities involved in the vote - among others, 59% in Bjelo Polje, 53% in Pljevlje, and similar results were recorded in Zabljak, Savnik, Danilovgrad. In Podgorica, the majority party won over 47% of the vote. The oppositions, and especially the forces gathered in the Democratic Front and the Socialist People's Party, have made it known that they do not want to accept the local election result which - they say - has taken place in an ''unfree and undemocratic'' manner, tainted by fraud, blackmail and purchase of votes. For that reason, they have invited the population to take to the streets and protest against what is called Milo Djukanovic's 'dictatorship. (ANSA).
