21 October, 19:10
(ANSA) - TRIESTE, OCT. 21 - On the occasion of the European Council in Brussels, where the European leaders are discussing how to cope with the most serious migrant crisis in recent history, hundreds of lifebuoys collected on the beach of Chios in Greece, have been displayed in the centre of four European cities (Brussels, Berlin, Warsaw and Poznan) as part of the ''Stand as one'' campaign of the Oxfam-ngo. This campaign aims to urge ''global action to accommodate refugees blackberries, prevent families to be divided and guarantee safety of people fleeing war and poverty''.

The initiative aims to highlight the ''dangerous journeys of men, women and children who have worn lifejackets to cross the Mediterranean Sea and flee war and persecution in their country of origin'' and ask for an intervention ''to ensuresafe and legal routes towards Europe as soon as possible''. According to Elisa Bacciotti, managing director of Oxfam's campaigns in Italy,'' these lifejackets represent thousands of children, women and men who tried to reach Europe by sea, but never arrived at their destination''.
