(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, SEPT. 28 - In Croatia, at the end of the
first round of consultations with the political parties after
the early elections held on September 11, the President of the
Republic, Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic, could not confer any
political leader the task of forming the new government, since
post-election negotiations are still going on.
It became clear today that a coalition between the conservative
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), led by MEP Andrej Plenkovic,
and the populist party Most (Bridge) is the most likely solution
so far. Plenkovic almost certainly will be in charge of forming
the government at the end of the second round of consultations,
scheduled for October 10.
Between the two potential coalition partners some points of the
political programme still have to be defined and, moreover, an
agreement on the division of the cabinet posts still has to be
made.
Unlike the previous government, which was also made up of HDZ
and Most, but with a strong tendency towards the right,
government led by Plenkovic - who made his party shift to more
moderate positions - should also have the support of the
deputies representing ethnic minorities, including the Italian
one, with Furio Radin.
Meanwhile, Kitarovic has called for parliament to convene for
its 1st constitutive session on October 14.
If negotiations between the HDZ and Most produce an agreement,
Croatia will have a government within a month. In the elections
held two weeks ago, the HDZ got 36.6% of the vote and a solid
majority of 61 deputies out of 151 sitting in the parliament in
Zagreb. (ANSA).
