Smog: WHO, Poland has the worst air pollution in EU

Town of Skala surpasses Beijing

04 January, 10:00
(ANSA) - TRIESTE - With 33 out of Europe's 50 most polluted cities, according to World Health Organisation, Poland is the continent's capital of smog, Financial Times said. Air pollution is felt particularly in the south of the country. It is mainly caused by high use of coal and lack of government green politics. In recent days, in the town of Skala, the levels of air pollutants has surpassed those in Beijing: more than twenty times the Eu limits. Poland is infringing the Clear Air for Europe directive in 46 monitoring areas. "Legislative and administrative measures taken so far to limit non-compliance have been deemed insufficient," the Commission said. The Environment Ministry acknowledges the problem but says the situation is gradually improving with modernization of heating systems and other energy-efficiency measures for homes, where old-generation heaters burn coal extensively. The conservative Law and Justice government, however, recently won Eu approval for a financial plan to support the lossmaking coal industry. President Andrzej Duda says that coal would continue to be the "backbone" of the energy sector. (ANSA).
