(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 16 SET - Poland aims at constructing an
undersea gas pipeline Poland-Denmark-Norway by 2022, the year in
which Poland's deal with Russia's Gazprom is set to expire,
Polskie radio reported.
"The plans to link deposits in Norway with the Polish gas
transmission system will definitely succeed this time. There is
a favourable political and economic situation", the Government's
representative for energy infrastructure, Piotr Naimski said,
suggesting that there was now a green light by the authorities
of the three countries to complete the project. Two previous
attempts at the link have failed - the first proposal failed in
2001 due to concerns about the cost of Norwegian gas, while a
second one was unsuccessfully made in 2007.
The Polish natural gas and oil company, Pgnig, which is
expected to have a role in the project, currently extracts
around half a billion cubic metres of gas per year in Norway.
Pgnig plans to increase the volume to 2-2.5 billion cubic metres
by 2022.
The pipeline is part of wider attempts to diversify Poland's
energy supplies. An Lng terminal was also opened earlier this
year, allowing Poland to import gas from Qatar. (ANSA).
