(ANSA) - TRIESTE - Extending the lifespan of the two operational units of the Kozloduy nuclear plant is of "strategic importance" for the Government of Bulgaria, said the country's energy minister Temenuzhka Petkova on the sidelines of a conference on nuclear energy held in Varna, according to Novinite portal.

The two units, with 1,000 Mw each, generate 34% of country's total energy output. The current licence for the Unit 5 expires in 2017, while it will expire in 2019 for the Unit 6. The modernisation programme, which comprises the improvement of the plant's security, aims at extending its lifespan for 20 years. Petkova had previously announced that Bulgaria was looking for a strategic investor to expend the country's nuclear production capacity. (ANSA).
