Romania: almost half of emigrants under 35 years old

Between 2015 and 2017 more than 300,000 left the country

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, NOVEMBER 6 - More than 620,000 Romanian citizens left the country between 2015 and 2017 and, of the total, almost half were under 35 years old, local media reported, quoting data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Official data show that 300,831 young people, under 35 years old, left Romania in the last three years, including more than 106,000 teenagers, the portal Business Review reported in an article titled "Romania is losing its young." The counties with the highest share of emigrants were Bacau, Botosani, Neamt, Iasi, Suceava and Vaslui, while the lowest migration share was recorded in Arad, Caras-Severin, Hunedoara, Timis, and Bucharest-Ilfov, all under two percent of emigrants.

Business Review added that the number of emigrants increased each year, with 12,000 more in 2016 than in 2015, 11,749 more in 2017 than in 2016. (ANSA).
