(ANSA) - VICOLI (PESCARA), JULY 30 - The naming of a community garden in Abruzzo, in the small village of Vicoli, after the hero Witold Pilecki - who volunteered for Auschwitz to witness the horror and report what was happening - has aroused considerable emotion in Poland. The Polish national television, DVT, has filmed the event in order to allow their compatriots to share it 'live'.

The news, released by 'Nasz Dziennik', was then reported by dozens of websites and other media, including 'Rzeczpospolita' and 'Radio Maryja', Polish blogs, triggering debate among many Internet users.

''The fact that the memory of Poland is so alive here is very important to us - explains Anna Wawrzyniak, member the Polish Embassy to Rome -; only 300 people live at Vicoli and their green area, from now on, will remind everybody of Pilecki and Poland'' .

The fraternal tie between Poland and Italy is not only represented in the national anthems of the two countries - Poland is mentioned in the Italian National Anthem and vice-versa -, but also in the experience that both countries lived during the 'Risorgimento', based on Mazzini's ideals, and especially in the history of the last century, when they used to fight side by side, as the Poles say, "for our freedom and yours".
