Chernobyl, in 2015 over 50 fires in the exclusion zone

(ANSA) - MOSCOW - More than 50 fires have been recorded since the beginning of the year in the Chernobyl nuclear power station exclusion zone, where the worst nuclear accident in history occured in 1986. This news was reported by Nikolai Cecetkin, head of the Ukrainian civil protection. ''The 70% are the result of arson", local broadcaster Channel 5 reported.

The last fire dates back to June 29 and spread over an area of about 130 hectares. According to Tass news agency, an inspection recorded, on July 1, in some portions of the area affected by the fire a tenfold growth in the levels of radioactivity. After extinguishing the fire, peat fires have continued to burn for another two weeks. (ANSA).
