Croatia approves law on civil unions

Gay couples: all the rights of marriage except adoption

15 July, 16:55

(ANSA) - ZAGREB - Croatia has joined the countries that recognize civil unions for same-sex couples, granting gay and lesbian couples couples all the rights and benefits of marriage, with the exception of child adoption, and defining these unions as a "form of family life".

The Parliament in Zagreb approved with 89 votes in favour, coming from the center-left and liberal parties which take part in the same ruling coalition, the Law on civil unions for same-sex couples, mostly set on the basis of the German law.

Sixteen deputies (right and center-right parties) voted against. These MPs do not object to the need for a law concerning same-sex couples, but they consider this law too liberal. (ANSA).
