Slovenia deficit hits 3.4% in the first-quarter

Concern about meeting Maastricht criteria

25 July, 15:20

(ANSA) - LJUBLJANA - According to Eurostat data, Slovenia's deficit in the first quarter of 2014 was 3.4% of GDP, 0.7% higher than the eurozone average.

The financial stability plan designed by Ljubljana's government is expected to meet Maastricht criteria by 2015: this year the deficit is expected to remain at 3.2% of GDP, before dropping further to 2.4% in 2015.

Slovenia has been in the excessive deficit procedure since 2009 and the forecast is not so good even for the period 2014-2015. EC's estimates, dating back to last May, indicate an excessive deficit for Slovenia even in 2015: according to Brussels, mismatch between income and expenditure would be 3.1% of GDP and therefore beyond parameters.
