Kosovo: 'Quint' satisfied with decision on KLA Court

Pristina renounced abolition

09 February, 13:55
(ANSA) - PRISTINA - Representatives in Kosovo of the United States, France, Great Britain, Germany and Italy - the main Western countries takin part in the so-called 'Quint' - welcomed the decision of Kosovar leadership to renounce the idea of abolishing the special court for KLA/UCK crimes. In a joint press released by the embassies of the five countries, Kosovar leaders are urged to ''keep their word and all the institutions of Kosovo to respect their commitments''.

Last December, a group of 43 deputies announced an initiative to repeal the law on the creation of the special court established by the parliament of Pristina in 2015. Based in the Hague, the Court has recently begun its activity to tackle the crimes committed by the militants of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA/UCK), the Albanian separatist guerrilla who fought against the Serbs in the armed conflict of the nineties. President Hashim Thaci, prime minister Ramush Haradinaj and the speaker of parliament Kadri Veselj dissociated themselves from the initiative taken by the deputies, ensuring that the Special Court will regularly conduct its activities. Thaci, Haradinaj and Veselj, who were among the leaders of the KLA in the past, risk being tried on war crimes charges. (ANSA).
