Meeting after the Wb6 Summit on 12 July

(ANSA) - TRIESTE - The institutions of Friuli Venezia Giulia launched an appeal to continue to pursue the "spirit of Trieste", taking advantage of the geopolitical location of the region to accompany the European integration of the Western Balkan countries after the Wb6 Summit on 12 July.

According to Roberto Antonione (CEI), "Russia, Turkey, China, USA have become partners of the Balkans' countries especially after Juncker's statements about the need to slow down the process of integration. The Berlin Process wants to give an opposite signal. For the first time the Berlin Process was hosted in a city like Trieste and not in a capital city. From here, a strong voice underlined the importance of building the Europe of the future".

"Trieste must become the place where decisions are made on this part of Europe, full of opportunities but at the same time of unresolved critical issues", the vice-president of the FVG Region Sergio Bolzonello said. MEP Isabella De Monte spoke about the "importance of cross-border connections and transport", inviting "to promote good-neighborly relations against nationalist influences: stable governments and democratic reforms are needed in the Wb6".

Diego Bravar, vice-president of Venezia Giulia's industrialists, stressed that "Trieste is the capital of innovation in Italy: this best practice is to be disseminated in the Balkan countries". According to Laura Chies, vice-president of the Area Science Park, "we need to imagine a closer collaboration with the Wb6 on research and innovation projects".

The general secretary of the Port of Trieste, Mario Sommariva, highlighted "the impetuous growth of our harbor and the traffics in the Adriatic: we can help the Balkan countries thanks to our experience in the management of infrastructure and human resources".

The rector of the University of Trieste, Maurizio Fermeglia, called for the "reinforcement of the Erasmus project in the Balkan countries", while the physicist Stefano Fantoni recalled how "the project of Trieste, the European Capital of Science 2020, has focused its attention on enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe ".
