Eurostat: in Bulgaria youngest first time mothers in the EU

Low median age also in Romania, Latvia, Slovakia, Poland

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 28 MAR - Bulgaria is the country with the youngest first time mothers in the EU, according to Eurostat data, made public today.

The statistical office of the EU said that the lowest mean age for first childbirth was recorded in 2016 in Bulgaria (26.0 years), followed by Romania (26.4), Latvia (26.8), Slovakia (27.0), Poland (27.2) and Lithuania (27.3). On average, mothers gave first birth in the EU when they were 29 years old. Italy has the oldest first time mothers (31 years).

Eurostat noted also a high share of 'teenage mothers' in certain areas in Central- and Eastern Europe. The highest shares of births to mothers less than 20 years old were recorded in Romania (14.2% of total births of first child in 2016), Bulgaria (13.6%) and Hungary (10.8%), and Slovakia (9.9%).
