Greece-Turkey quake kills two, sends tourists into panic

Magnitude 6.7-quake strikes Kos and Bodrum, 200 injured

21 July, 13:02
(ANSA) - ROME - A 6.7-magnitude quake early on Friday killed two people on the Greek island of Kos - a Turkish and a Swedish national - and sowed panic overnight in the Greek islands and the Turkish coastal town of Bodrum.

At least 200 people reported injuries in Kos and Bodrum after the earthquake, whose epicenter was about 16.2 km east-northeast of Kos in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey, according to the US Geological Survey.

Kos is known as the birthplace of Hippocrates, often referred to as the father of clinical medicine who founded a medical school there.

More recently, Kos made the news after a Syrian child, Aylan, was found dead on its shores as his family attempted to flee their war-torn country.

Bodrum, the ancient Greek city of Halicarnassus, can be easily reached in an hour by sea from Kos.

In Kos, over 120 people were injured, including three who are in critical condition.

Many buildings in the historic centers were damaged, including an ancient mosque and a 14th century fortress at the entrance of the main port.

Kos Mayor Giorgos Kyritsis said that rescuers are checking whether people have remained trapped under the debris while other rescue teams are checking the island's villages. The army has also been deployed alongside emergency services, he explained.

The island's port has reported significant damage and all maritime transport services have been suspended. (ANSA).
