Bulgaria and Austria leading EU, 2018 uphill

Migrant challenges, Brexit, eurozone, Germany, Spain, Italy vote

01 January, 15:05
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - The first Bulgarian presidency in the history of the EU, which took the baton from Estonia, was officially taken on Monday, while in the second half of the new year will be turn of the controversial Austrian right-wing new government.

The most difficult issues remain on the table: the migrants and the revision of the European asylum system, Brexit, the reform of the Eurozone and the post-2020 future of the Union.

2018 is the last useful year before the European elections of 2019.

In the background there is France alone in command with Macron, Germany with weakened Merkel who has not yet managed to form a government, Spain in an unprecedented political crisis with Catalonia calling for independence, and Poland on a course of collision with Brussels which initiated a 'nuclear' impact procedure for non-compliance with the rule of law. Elections in Italy are coming, which outcome is expected with apprehension in Europe, but also political elections in Hungary and presidential elections in the Czech Republic. (ANSA).
