'Relocation appeals to be rejected', EU attorney general

In Slovakia-Hungary case

26 July, 15:57
(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - The EU court of justice must ''reject appeals from Slovakia and Hungary'' against a temporary mandatory relocation scheme for asylum seekers from Italy and Greece, according to attorney general Yves Bot.

Both said the emergency mechanism contributes to ensure that Greece and Italy are able to deal with the 2015 migrant crisis.

In the majority of cases, the court's rulings follow the attorney general's opinion.

As a response to the migrant crisis in Europe in the summer of 2015, the EU Council decided in favor of reallocations to help Italy and Greece confront the emergency.

Slovakia and Hungary, which along with the Czech Republic and Romania voted against the measure, are asking the court to annul the decision, citing erroneous procedures or inappropriate legal grounds. They said the council's decision did not respond to the migrant crisis nor was it necessary to that end.

Poland backed Slovakia and Hungary in the legal proceeding while Belgium, Germany, Greece, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Sweden and the Commission backed the EU Council.

In his conclusions today, which are not binding, attorney general Bot suggested to the court to reject the cases presented by Slovakia and Hungary. (ANSA).
