Czechia: CEZ to focus on small modular nuclear reactors

Prague sees new technology as 'future of nuclear energy'

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, SEPTEMBER 30 - The Czech State-controlled energy company CEZ and the U.S. firm NuScale Power have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the use of small modular reactor (SMR) in the Czech Republic.

The agreement, reached last week, foresees that the two companies will share nuclear and technical expertise and examine applications of NuScale SMRs, the U.S. company said in a statement. "I am confident that the simplified design and resulting lower operating costs of NuScale's SMR make us the ideal technology to help CEZ meet a growing demand for cost-effective, carbon free energy," said NuScale Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Hopkins.

In the Czech Republic around one third of the electricity is generated by nuclear power, with two nuclear power plants (Temelín and Dukovany) operated by CEZ, Radio Prague reported.

"The Czech government gives top priority to innovations and small modular reactors can be the future of nuclear energy," Minister of Industry of the Czech Republic Karel Havlicek said, quoted by Radio Prague. Small modular reactors are significantly smaller than conventional reactors, they can be manufactured at a plant and brought to a site to be assembled, improving security and reducing costs, Radio Prague recalled .
