Bulgaria: green light to rail transport liberalization

Unlikely that private companies will operate before 2025

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, FEB 25 - The Bulgarian Parliament has amended the national Railways Act, a step towards the liberalization of the rail passenger transport market in the country, local media reported.

Starting from June 2019, private and foreign railway companies will have access to the Bulgarian railway infrastructure facilities to perform all types of rail transport services for passengers and cargo on a fair, non-discriminatory and transparent conditions, the news agency Novinite informed. However, due to the existence of an ongoing public service contract between the State and the BDZ Passenger Transport, expiring in 2024, "it is unlikely that other foreign and Bulgarian private rail passengers" will start operating in Bulgaria in the next five years, the agency noted.
