(ANSA) - PALERMO, OCTOBER 30 - As part of the exhibition of
the statuary group the 'Last Supper', Caltanissetta's creativity
and culture councillor Marina Castiglione will be holding a
conference on 'Food and Popular Devotion'.
From Christmas specialties to food ''of the dead'' and Easter
lambs, from the 'muffolette di San Martino' to Carnival
'ravioli': various devotional food from the city will be
illustrated. Though similar across the island, certain
traditions are specific to the city, such as its 'crocette' and
Easter 'Spine Sante'.
The symbolic aspect of devotional food, often linked to
conventional practices and therefore out-of-the-ordinary
ingredients, is doubtlessly a part of the ''energy for life''
that has enabled and enables the community to come together
around a table in which material and 'transcendent' realities
come together, creating a relationship with saints, the dead and
God. (ANSA).
