(ANSA) - MILAN, JULY 27 - A sociologist and street food expert gave Expo visitors a glimpse into the state of the sector at the Slow Food pavilion on Monday.

"There are an estimated 8,500 street food vendors in Italy, with 3,000 new licenses issued since 2009," said Bicocca University Professor Stefano Marras, the founder and president of the Street Food Square association and editor of the book Street Food: Culture, Economy, Health and Governance.

These range from the sandwich trucks stationed outside night clubs to gourmet trucks plying exclusive products, he said.

The phenomenon has generated some 50 festivals across Italy attracting 600,000 visitors over the past year, with up to 100,000 people signing up for the Turin Street Food Parade.
