"Problems related to water resource scarcity and intense weather events caused by climate change have no borders. Solutions are difficult, so we must join forces and share strategies to create good practices in our respective territories." Friuli Venezia Giulia's Councillor for Environmental Defense, Fabio Scoccimarro, said this during the first conference on climate change and water supply on the territory of the Istrian Peninsula, which is underway in Pula.
The Croatian Association of Engineers, the Slovenian Association of Engineers, and the Istria Region Association organized the event. "There are already projects," Scoccimarro continued, "that we are pursuing together precisely to tackle the issue of limiting the waste of water resources through more efficient management of aqueduct networks in transnational connections.
For example, excellent relations exist between Fvg and Slovenia regarding the interconnection of aqueducts between Santa Barbara and Elerji. We also collaborate through the NadriWater project to manage the network between the Trieste and Koper aqueducts.
"In Fvg," the councilor pointed out, addressing administrators and experts from Slovenia and Croatia, "we are grappling with the problem of groundwater at minimum levels. We have issued an ordinance by which we finance, with 100 percent grants, the installation of flow reducers in domestic artesian wells and municipal fountains." Scoccimarro then relaunched the Summit of Sustainable Development of the Upper Adriatic and Central Europe.
"It is in this spirit," he concluded, "that next Wednesday and Thursday in Trieste, also with the Istrian Region, we will meet to address issues concerning air quality. We pledge to organize a summit dedicated to water resource issues in the coming years."
