Since the beginning of the conflict
in Ukraine, the Bulgarian Refugee Agency has granted temporary
protection to more than 180 thousand Ukrainians who arrived in
the country after the Russian invasion, of whom more than 30
thousand are men between 18 and 60 years of age, i.e., obliged
to military conscription.An additional 2,700 men from Ukraine
have been registered in Bulgaria since the beginning of the
year.They avoid talking about the new Ukrainian mobilization law
but 'off the record' admit they do not want to go to the front
to fight. This is noted in a report broadcast last night on
Bulgarian national TV Bnt, dedicated to the Kiev-wanted
suspension of consular services abroad for male Ukrainians of
military conscription age. The suspension will be effective
until the new law on the mobilization of civilians in the armed
forces comes into force on May 18. "People don't want to die, if
they send you to the front you will be killed, and for nothing,"
declares 19-year-old Ukrainian Oleg before the cameras. Oleg
arrived in Sofia a year ago and works in an auto repair shop. "I
have a cousin who died in the war. My place is not at the front,
I am not prepared to fight in a war," Oleg adds.
