At the event, Professors Pesenti and Stocchetti, from the Ca' Foscari University of Venice, presented the results of studies carried out along the Italy-Slovenia-Croatia cross-border route, estimating an average number of passengers between 28,400 and 36,000 per year.
Considering the absence of a direct rail connection on this route, the study also pointed out that introducing the service itself could generate additional demand.
Paolo Dileno, Project Manager (CEI), informed that through the Interreg Central Europe SUSTANCE project, a new experimental direct rail link between Trieste, Villa Opicina, and Rijeka will be tested in the summer of 2024, thanks to the cooperation between Slovenian and Croatian Railways.
A preliminary discussion on the resumption of international passenger train connectivity along part of the Western Balkans TEN-T corridor on the Trieste-Ljubljana-Zagreb-Belgrade route also occurred during the meeting.
