The number of irregular border
crossings increased by 17% in the first 11 months of 2023,
reaching over 355,300, according to Frontex. This figure has
already surpassed the total for 2022, making it the highest
recorded since 2016.
The Central Mediterranean remained the busiest migratory
route in 2023, with national authorities reporting more than
152,200 detections in the first 11 months. This is the route's
highest total for this time period since 2016. On the other
hand, the Western Balkan route saw the largest annual drop among
the major migratory routes during the January-November period,
with the number of irregular crossings falling 28% to 98 600.
