North Macedonia will vote for
presidential and parliamentary elections on April 24 and May 8,
respectively, the latter date on which a possible presidential
runoff is also scheduled. This was announced by Parliament
Speaker Jovan Mitreski, at the same time also launching an
appeal for fairness so that the election campaign will be
conducted in a peaceful and democratic atmosphere. Following the
resignation on Jan. 25 of Macedonia's social democratic premier,
Dimitar Kovacevski, and his government, a new executive took
office on Jan. 28 to bring the country to the polls, headed by
Talat Dzaferi. North Macedonia is a member country of NATO and
aims to join the EU.
