The death of a man from gunshot wounds
in Naples on Thursday night is unrelated to celebrations in the
city after Napoli won its third Italian championship title,
Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi said on Friday.
"This death is related to dynamics that have nothing to do with
the party," Manfredi told Radio Anch'io.
26-year-old Ponticelli resident Vincenzo Costanzo was already
known to police and had a "significant" criminal record,
explained the mayor.
"It was probably a settling of scores that took advantage of the
party," he added.
Three other people are known to have been wounded by gunfire,
probably in the same episode.
"The ambush did not involve anyone who was not in the victim's
group," said Manfredi, suggesting that the shooting involved the
local Camorra mafia.
Naples Prefect Claudio Palomba also said Costanzo's death was
"absolutely unrelated" to the celebrations.
"I would like to stress the Neapolitans' sense of
responsibility: yesterday there was a traffic ban and it was
largely observed," he told SkyTg24.
"The organizational machinery worked," added Palomba.
Separately, a 20-year-old woman was seriously injured in
hospital on Friday with a brain hemorrhage after being hit by a
car during celebrations near Naples.
On Thursday evening Napoli clinched the Scudetto with five games
to spare after a 1-1 draw against Udinese gave them an
unassailable 16-point lead at the top of the table.
It was the third Italian championship crown in the history of
the Naples side, and their first since 1990, when late soccer
great Diego Maradona played for them.
