Vatican daily L'Osservatore Romano on
Friday hailed Napoli's third Serie A title win citing a famous
19th century Neapolitan song called Era de maggio (It Was May)
that has been recorded by generations of artists including
Roberto Murolo, Lina Sastri, Tito Schipa, Giuseppe Di Stefano,
Franco Battiato, Massimo Ranieri, Luciano Pavarotti, and Mina.
L'Osservatore recalled that it was also May when Diego Maradona
led Napoli to its first scudetto, in 1987. The Argentine legend
went on to inspire their second too, in 1990.
"In 1987 too, 'era de maggio': Napoli's first scudetto came in
the month after which is titled one of the most beautiful songs
ever written," it said citing the song written by Mario Pasquale
Costa from an 1885 poem by Neapolitan poet Salvatore Di Giacomo.
"Napoli's scudetto is a good pretext for everyone, not only the
fans, to listen again, in this May that returns to welcome us
with its rekindled hopes, (the song that) sounds like a prayer
vouchsafing oneself to that one love that 'nun vota vico'
(doesn't change its path)".
