Some 605 refugees and migrants
arrived on Lampedusa on Friday, the day after a record 1,869
people arrived on the tiny southern Sicilian island.
On Thursday evening the Italian Coast Guard intervened in
support of a rescue operation involving 42 people including 5
women and one child, who had been picked up by Tunisian
fishermen after the boat they were travelling on was shipwrecked
in the Italian search and rescue (SAR) zone.
The group had set sail from the Tunisian coastal town of Sfax on
Wednesday.
Several of the rescued people, who came from Ivory Coast,
Cameroon and Nigeria, required medical treatment for
hypothermia. No-one was reported missing in the shipwreck.
On Friday there were over 3,000 people in the Lampedusa hotspot.
