The February 26 shipwreck off Italy's
southern Calabria region that led to the death of at least 72
refugees and migrants was "not a tragedy waiting to happen, but
one that had been denounced", Cardinal Michael Czerny, the
Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human
Development, said Friday.
"I think it is hypocritical to say it was not possible to
respond," the Cardinal said in an interview to Vatican News.
Rather, we were unable or unwilling to forestall it," he
continued.
"In the Church, many have pointed this out a thousand times,
starting with Pope Francis: tragically, these events come as no
surprise and they are very political... as well as being very
sad," said the Cardinal.
