If the data of the latest two
shipwrecks Monday are confirmed, in 2024 "the number of dead and
missing in the central Mediterranean would rise to over 800, an
average of almost 5 dead and missing per day since the beginning
of the year", said UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the IOM -
International Organisation for Migration and UNICEF - United
Nations Children's Fund.
Over 50 migrants are missing after a shipwreck 100 miles off the
Calabrian coast while 10 migrants were found dead in the flooded
lower deck of another boat in the central Med Monday.
The organizations expressed "deep sorrow for the dozens of
victims of two new incidents in the Mediterranean".
