Islamist militant group Hamas is not
defending Palestinian teritory but waging jihad or holy war on
Israel, Premier Giorgia Meloni said in meeting the press in
Cairo on the sidelines of the Mideast peace summit Saturday.
"My view is that the way Hamas has attacked Israel is that the
Palestinian cause has nothing to do with it," said Meloni.
"What is being pursued is an Islamic jihad.
"What is being pursued is an attempt to prevent a process of
normalisation in the Middle East", she said.
The prime minister explained "there is and will be a strategy of
division, to create a clash of civilisations and a war of
religion.
"But it must not become one, because it is not".
