Olympic champion fencer Arianno
Errigo got the Italian flag from President Sergio Mattarella at
the presidential palace Thursday to bear it alongside Olympic
champion high jumper Gianmarco 'Gimbo' Tamberi at the Paris 2024
Games opening ceremony next month.
The 36-year-old from Monza, who won gold at London 2012 in the
individual foil and has been a six-time world team champ, said
she was extremely excited by the honour.
"Being here is an immense emotion. When I heard I couldn't sleep
and with two children it's not easy. Becoming a mother made it
difficult for me to fit everything in, between children and
training. But I believed I could do it and now here I am," she
said, fighting back tears.
"I feel like a more mature athlete and a happier mother".
Tamberi, 32, from Marche, sent the Olimpico crowd wild in
winning the European title Tuesday night, feigning an injury to
take springs out of a shoe, and climbing up to greet Mattarella.
