(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 2 - Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said
Friday that Susanna Schlein, a senior official at the Italian
embassy in Athens, was lucky to be alive after a firebomb attack
on vehicles outside her residence overnight.
A car belonging to Schlein, the sister of Democratic Party (PD)
lawmaker Elly Schlein, was completely destroyed in an explosion
caused by a firebomb.
There was also an attempt to set alight another car, near to
which a Molotov cocktail with a half burned fuse was found.
"It's a miracle she is alive," Tajani said on the sidelines of
the Med Dialogues conference.
"Fortunately the Molotov under a car near to a gas system, which
is under the family bedroom, did not go off".
In a statement, Premier Giorgia Meloni expressed "my personal
solidarity and that of the government to the First Counsellor of
Italy's embassy in Athens, Susanna Schlein, and deep concern
about the attack that hit her, which was probably of an
anarchist nature.
In recent days there have been slogans daubed on the Italian
embassy in Athens expressing solidarity with the hunger strike
of jailed Italian anarchist Alfredo Cospito, who is protesting
against his detention under the tough conditions of the 41 bis
regime normally reserved for mafia convicts. (ANSA).
